Overturned folds

The sandstone layers that outcrop in the park represent some of the Apennines' most distinctive folds. These are anticlines, that is, upward-arching folds, which have overturned on one side due to ongoing intense compressional forces.

On mountainsides with vegetation cover, the existence of folds can be detected by the presence of outcroppings, even those located at a distance, as in the case of the overturned fold at Monteacuto, in the Silla Valley.

Within the park, the best exposure of a fold can be seen along the left side of the Dardagna Valley, where, from certain points (at the Dardagna Falls or on the road leading up to Madonna dell'Acero), one can spot the fold's hinge zone at the base of the mountainside descending from Mount Mancinello.
