There is essentially no vegetation cover on the badlands in the summer. In spring and fall, grasses grow on their peaks and along the ridges separating the gullies. They are, in large part, the same grass species that inhabit the surrounding dry meadows.
Plant species that tolerate standing water can be found at the foot of the badlands, where the clay slides accumulate: coltsfoot, false yellowhead and common cocklebur (Xantium italicum).
